Rylance, Mark. (Added Author). John, Gottfried, 1942- (Added Author). Smith, Daniel, actor. (Added Author). Krige, Alice, 1954- (Added Author). Walser, Robert, 1878-1956 Jakob von Gunten. (Added Author). Brothers Quay. (Added Author). British Film Institute. (Added Author).

Summary: The Quay Brothers' first feature film is based on Swiss writer Robert Walser's book about a dilapidated mid-European school for servants. It has the atmosphere of a contemporary fairy tale, both fantastic and mystical, with an extraordinary, luminescent atmosphere, mesmerising imagery and an underlying mood of intense repressed eroticism that is punctuated with touches of dark wry humour.
